I believe we've got some racquetball players who are ready to get this season going. For those of you who were not able to attend the first shootout of the year, whether to play or watch, missed a great tournament with some intense matches. The event was held at the Thornton YMCA in Tulsa with 52 players in 7 divisions not only from Oklahoma but Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri as well. The Men's Open/A Doubles division was loaded with 10 talented teams and the B division drew 5 teams. Locals Brad Guidry and Sam Thomas took top honors while Chris Shaw and Danny Martin of Arkansas won the Men's B division. This was the first tournament for Corey Sole, Aaron Landry and Jon Bushman with all three taking home medals. The shootout also brought out a couple of players from the past. Mike Sole and Donnie Hendricks haven't swung a racquet in several years and have vowed to get back in shape and return to the tournament circuit. Maybe they were a little out of shape but their kill shots and court sense never left them. The two teamed up and made it to the Open Doubles Consolation Final only to lose to Brian Watson and Torry Brand. Donnie worked his way through the Men's Open singles draw to meet Brad Guidry in the finals. It was a great match with Donnie defeating one of Tulsa's best players in the tie-breaker. The ORA would like to thank Brian Watson, Torry Brand and Mark McCready of Subway for their generous donation of sandwiches for the players. For those of you that don't know them they are great racquetball players and have helped us out with our hospitality for numerous events. If you see them on the court please thank them for their contributions. Thanks to all who participated and we look forward to seeing each and every one of you at the Cushing Community Center in mid-October for the Oklahoma State Doubles tournament. Be sure and check out the photos from the shootout on the tournament results page. |
